The kinkajou honey bear is a rain forest animal that lives in the tropical rain forests of Central American and South America. People also call it the honey bear.

People mistake kinkajous for ferrets or monkeys, but they are not closely related to either animal. This arboreal mammal is seldomly seen because of their strict nocturnal habits. People hunt them for the pet trade, their fur to make wallets and horse saddles, and for their meat.

Although scientists classify the kinkajous honey bear in the order carnivora and it has sharp teeth, its omnivorous diet consists mainly of fruit. 90 percent of their diet consists of primarily ripe fruit, especially figs. To eat softer fruits, they hold the food with their front paws. Then, they scoop out the juicy pulp with their tongue. They play an important role in seed dispersal. Leaves, flowers, and various herbs make up much of the other 10 percent of their diet.

• They sometimes eat insects, particularly ants. They also eat bird eggs and small vertebrates. A slender, five-inch tongue helps them obtain fruit and lick nectar from flowers. They also obtain nectar by eating entire flowers. Captive honey bears will eat honey, but researchers have not yet observed honey in the diet of wild kinkajous.
