The golden-rumped elephant shrew is a small African mammal that lives in the northern coastal areas in and around Arabuko Sokoke National Park in Kenya. It shares the title of the largest species of the elephant shrew family with its close relative they grey faced sengi.
It has a golden coloration on its rump and a grizzled golden forehead that contrasts with its dark reddish-brown color. They have long muscular legs and shorter, less developed forelegs and a long, flexible snout. Its tail is largely black except for the last third, which is white with a black tip.
Their diet consists of earthworms, millipedes, insects, and spiders. These animals spend eighty percent of their day foraging through leaf litter looking for grasshoppers, beetles, and other small invertebrates.
They are very fast and can run up to 15 miles per hour. When it detects a predator within its escape distance, it adopts a defensive position. It then tries to escape, taking advantage of its agility and speed.
