Squirrel monkeys come from northern South America. Their geographical range spans wide sections of the Amazon basin north of the Amazon River. Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, and Venezuela contain wild populations.
Rain, secondary growth, gallery, tropical marshes and deep swamps serve as their main habitats. People call this monkey the Guianan squirrel monkey.
Short, dense olive or gray fur covers the body and head. Bright yellow fur colors the arms and legs. White fur loops around the eyes to create a mask with a sharp, pointed arch above the brows. Dark brown or black fur rings their mouths and chins.
Tree-dwelling creatures rarely descend to ground level to avoid predators. Highly active, they mostly eat sweet fruit, nuts, and insects. Crickets, grasshoppers, caterpillars, and cicadas provide critical protein. Nectar, flowers, buds, seeds, leaves, and bird eggs supplement diets during dry seasonal shifts.
Birds of prey, snakes, and small forest carnivores hunt these monkeys frequently. Deforestation and capture for pet-trade threaten them.
