The aardwolf is an insectivorous hyena species from East and Southern Africa. Its name means earth-wolf in Afrikaans and Dutch. People also call it the mane-jackal, termite-eating hyena, or civet hyena.
The aardwolf does not hunt large animals like other carnivores do. It eats insects and their larvae, especially termites. One aardwolf can lap up 300,000 termites in a single night. It uses a long, sticky tongue that withstands strong termite bites.
Aardwolves live in the shrublands of eastern and southern Africa. These open lands contain stunted trees and shrubs. The animal is nocturnal, so it rests in burrows during the day and seeks food at night.
