Species Data & Biological Measurements
The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is a Neotropical crocodilian. It is the most widespread of the four extant species of crocodiles from the Americas. Populations live from South Florida and coastal Mexico to as far south as Peru and Venezuela. This quadruped features four short stocky legs; a long, powerful tail; and a scaly hide with rows of ossified scutes.
- Physical Features: The snout is longer and narrower than that of the American Alligator but broader on average than that of the Orinoco crocodile.
- Adaptations: Nostrils, eyes, and ears sit on top of the head for concealment. Eyes have nictitating membranes and lacrimal glands for tear production. Camouflage helps it prey on food.
- Hatchling Size: New hatchlings measure about 10.5 inches and weigh 2 oz.
- Adult Male Size: Range from 9 ft. 6 in. to 13 ft. 1 in. long; weight up to 842 lb.
- Adult Female Size: Range from 8 ft. 2 in. to 9 ft. 10 in. long; weight up to 381 lb.
- Coloration: Adults are grayish-green with white or yellow undersides. Juveniles have dark cross-banding on the tail and back. They are paler and more grayish than the dark-hued American alligator.
- Movement: They can “high walk” and charge at 10 mph. They swim at speeds up to 20 mph using sinuous body movements but cannot sustain this speed.
