The Panthera atrox is an extinct big cat. The species name means cruel. People also call it the American lion or North American lion.
This cat lived in North America during the Late Pleistocene epoch. It lived from around 129,000 to 13,000 years ago. The extinctions followed human arrival in the Americas. Humans hunted the plant-eating prey. This triggered a food shortage that starved the lions, in addition to climatic change.
DNA evidence shows its closest living relative is the modern lion. The American lion branched of from the Eurasian cave lion. Scientists suggest this split happened around 165,000 years ago.
Paleontologists have found its fossils across North America from Canada to Mexico.
It ruled as a top predator in North American ecosystems. It lived alongside the Smilodon and Homotherium.
Some experts think these cats lived in groups like modern lions. However, they do not know for sure.
