Description
American pronghorn skull replica measures 10.8 x 5.0 x 5.9 inches. The Antilocapra americana skull replica is a museum-quality polyurethane resin cast of a California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. The horn sheath measures 7.9 inches. Made in the USA.
The pronghorn is an artiodactyl mamma indigenous to interior western and central North America.
Though not an antelope, people call it the American antelope, prong buck, pronghorn antelope, and prairie antelope. The animal gets its name from its horn sheaths that branch and have a forward-pointing tine. Pronghorns have distinct white fur on the rumps, sides, bellies, and across their throats.
Adult males measure 4.3 to 4.9 feet long from nose to tail. They stand 2.7 to 3.4 feet high at the shoulder and weigh 88 to 143 pounds. The females match the height of the males but weigh 75 to 106 pounds.
The pronghorn is the fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. Its body is built for maximum predator evasion through running. It can run 35 miles per hour for 4 miles. It reaches 42 miles per hour for 1 mile.
They consume a strictly herbivorous diet on the open plains of desert grasses, weeds, forbs, sagebrush, cacti and shrubs.
The female has a gestation of about 250 days. The newborn fawns hide in the dense grass for their first few days. They develop rapidly and within weeks outrun predators alongside the herd.
