The extinct Asian hippopotamus was a medium-sized mammal native to the Indian subcontinent. Fossils have been discovered across India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Indonesia.

These ancient animals lived from the Late Miocene epoch through the Middle Pleistocene epoch. This timeline means they existed from about 6 million years ago until roughly 70,000 years ago.

This prehistoric creature was an herbivore. It used its complex jaws to feed on grass and water plants. Female Asian hippos gave birth to live young, and they most likely had only one baby.

The animal was smaller than modern hippopotamus. It was about 9.8 feet long and stood about 4.5 feet tall at the shoulder. Their most unique feature was their dental structure. Unlike living hippos that have four front incisor teeth, they had six front teeth in each jaw.

The Asian hippopotamus were incapable of jumping but could climb up steep banks. Despite being semiaquatic and having webbed feet, they were not a particularly good swimmer nor can it float.
