The brush-tailed rock wallaby lives across eastern Australia. They inhabit rock piles and cliff lines from northwest of Brisbane down to northern Victoria. They occupy steep rocky terrain, rainforests, and dry forests.

These nocturnal marsupials feed on grass and plant in the surrounding terrain at night. They emerge from their shelters shortly after dusk to forage for food.

Females give birth to one baby after a short gestation. The newborn joey nurses and stays in the mother’s pouch for about 26 weeks.

People also call them the small-eared rock wallaby. They weigh between 11 and 17 pounds. They have a head and body length of about 22 inches. Their long, shaggy tail is about 19 to 27 inches long. The tail fur becomes bushy towards its brush-like end.

They have dense and shaggy grey-brown fur. Their paler belly fur sometimes has a white patch on the chest. Very dark fur covers their paws, feet, and lower limbs. A white strip often runs along the side of the body.

They spend their days inside steep, rocky shelters like caves or thick overhangs. They travel fast across rocks to hide from danger. Large bushfires in southeast Australia destroyed about 70 percent of their habitat by January 2020. Populations have seriously declined in the south and west, but they remain locally common in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland.
