Burchell’s zebra is a southern subspecies of the plains zebra. It comes originally from southern and eastern Africa. These wild herds roam open grasslands and savanna ecosystems. They eat grass and other tough vegetation.
The animal gets is name from the British explorer William Burchell.
Females and males are about the same size. They stand from 11 to 14 hands high. They weigh between 500 and 700 pounds. These zebras feature stripes on the head, the neck, and the flanks.
The stripes fade down the upper segments of the limbs and turn completely white. One or two shadow stripes rest between the bold, broad stripes on the haunch. This main distinguishing characteristic sets the animal apart from other subspecies.
It has a distinct dorsal line. The tail is only bristly at the end, and the body is distinctly white. The dorsal line is narrow. It becomes gradually broader toward the rear, margined with white on each side.
These mammals live in small family groups. They form either harem or bachelor groups. Harem groups consist of one stallion, one to six mares, and their most recent foals. Bachelor groups contain two to eight unattached stallions.
They migrate the longest distance of any land animal in Africa. The herd makes a round trip of 300 miles. They migrate from the Chobe River in Namibia to Nxai Pan National Park in Botswana. Their migration follows a straight north-south route almost entirely within the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation area.
