Gorgonopsids lived as the top predators of the Late Permian period roughly 255 million years ago. These massive hunters grew to the size of a modern rhinooceros and dominated the ancient lands of Africa and Russia. Specifically, they possessed giant, saber-like teeth to pierce the thick skin of their prey.
This genus had a unique mix of reptile and mammal traits. These creatures had an upright stance and powerful jaws that could open at very wide angles.
Also, the skulls from the Karoo Basin reveal deep pits for strong muscle attachments. While they belonged to the synapsid line, this specific group disappeared forever during the Great Dying.
