Description
Adults reach lengths up to 17.4 feet and weigh between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds. Mature males are easy to spot due to a striking white cap on their rounded foreheads and a stuffy, white-tipped beak.
They have an arched lower jaw that has two large, flat, tusk-like teeth that emerge from the middle of the jawline. Males use them as weapons to fight other males for social standing, leaving their dark gray bodies heavily covered in long white scars.
These elusive marine mammals are deep-diving suction feeders. They expand their throat grooves to create a powerful suction that draws prey straight into their mouths without chewing. Squid and various fish make up their primary hunting diet.
