Pachyarmatherium leiseyi is an extinct relative of modern armadillos. This species lived in North and South America millions of years ago. Fossil experts often call it the giant one-banded armadillo.

This prehistoric animal had an armored shell to protect it from danger.  Its back end was wide and heavy.

It grew much larger than any armadillo alive today. It likely ate insects, fungi, and soft plants.

This creature went extinct near the end of the Ice Age. Scientists study its bone to learn about prehistoric life.
