Minke whales range throughout all oceans and adjoining seas worldwide. They thrive across a broad global territory spanning from freezing polar regions to warm tropical waters.
Filter feeding allows them to capture vast amounts of krill, plankton, and small schooling fish like sardines, herring, and mackerel.
Adults reach lengths up to 35 feet and weigh approximately ten tons. Sleek, dark gray or black bodies have a white underside, and a pale chevron marking behind the head. They have a bright white band on each pectoral flipper.
A narrow, pointed snout holds 240 to 360 yellowish feeding plates on each side of the upper jaw. Fifty to seventy throat folds open wide during fast gulps to swallow huge amounts of fish.
