Narwhals live year-round in the freezing Arctic waters around Greenland, Canada, and Russia. This remote northern region marks their entire global geographic range.
These medium-sized whales reach weights falling within a range from 1,1760 to 3,530 pounds. A mottled pattern creates skin pigmentation that has blackish-brown markings over a white background. Young calves have dark skin at birth but become much more white with age. Very old males are almost pure white.
A single long tusk projects from the left side of the upper jaw through the lip. This prominent canine tooth forms a helix spiral. Growth continues throughout life until the hollow tooth reaches about 4.9 to 10.2 feet. About one in 500 males develops two tusks. Only about 15 percent of females grow a tusk.
Squid, halibut, Arctic cod, shrimp, and crabs make up their primary food sources. Capelin, wolffish, rockfish, and flounder are also consumed along with krill and small crustaceans.
