The Northern American opossum, commonly known as the Virginia opossum, exists as the only marsupial found north of Mexico. Their range extends from southern Canada down to northern Costa Rica.

It is the northernmost marsupial in the worlds. People in the United States call the animal a possum. It is a solitary and nocturnal animal about the size of a domestic cat.

They are omnivorous and eat a wide range of plants and animals. They eat fruits, grains, insects, snails, earthworms, carrion, snakes, birds, mice, and other small animals. Persimmons are one of their favorite foods.

Their tails are long, and hairless. They measure 13 to 37 inches long from their snout to base of the tail. They rank amoung the world’s most variably sized mammals. Their coats are a dull grayish brown, other than their faces, white are white. Their long, flat nose is a soft petal pink color.

North American opossums are known for reacting to threats by feigning death. This behavior is the genesis of the term playing possum.

Females give birth to large litters of up to 20 babies, though only about eight survive. The young joeys crawl into the mother’s pouch to finish growing. When they are a little older, they cling to their mother’s back while she is foraging for food.
