Description

Patagonian mara skull replica measures 5.1 x 2.5 x 2.7 inches. The Dolichotis patagonum skull is a museum-quality polyurethane resin cast from California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA.

The Patagonian mara lives in open and semiopen habitats in Argentina, including large parts of Patagonia.

This herbivorous, somewhat rabbit-like rodent is monogamous. However, it often breeds in warrens shared by several pairs. The breeding season takes place from August to January. Adult maras average a gestation period of around 100 days. Most wild females produce just one single litter every year.

The Patagonian mara resembles a jackrabbit. It has distinctively long ears and long limbs. Its hind legs are longer and more muscular than its fore limbs. It also features a longer radius than humerus bone. The compressed feet make them look hoof-like. The fore feet have four digits while the hind feet have three digits.

Their tails are short, depressed, and hairless. It has a gray dorsal pledge with a white patch on the rump.  A black area separates this white patch from the dorsal fur. These rodents have a white underside with a somewhat orange flank and chin.

They are largely herbivorous. They feed on green vegetation and fruit. In the Monte Desert, monocots make up to 70 percent of their diet. Dicots make up 30 percent of their intake.
