The front and hind paws of raccoons have 5 digits each. The dexterous front paws enable the raccoon to grasp and manipulate food items. Raccoons are excellent climbers, and can descend a tree head first.
Raccoon tracks are easily identified by the five long toes on each foot. The front foot is shaped somewhat similar to a human hand. Tracks are usually paired, with the front and hind tracks positioned next to each other as the animal walks along.
Raccoon footprints are hand-shaped with a diameter that measure about 2 to 3 inches across. They register five finger-like toes in both front and hind feet and also often register small claws. Their back feet are a bit longer (up to 4 about inches long).

They are lively, nocturnal omnivores found from southern Canada to Panama. Their diet consist of crayfish, crabs, frogs, fish, nuts seeds and berries. They are also known to raid campsites and enjoy human food as well.
The raccoon or Procyon lotors original habitats are deciduous and mixed forests, but due to their adaptability they have extended their range to mountainous areas, coastal marshes, and urban areas, where some homeowners consider raccoons to be pests.
As a result of escapes and deliberate introductions in the mid-20th century, Racoons or Procyon lotor are now also distributed across much of mainland Europe, Caucasus, and Japan.
Related raccoon or Procyon lotor females often share a common area, while unrelated males live together in groups of up to four animals to maintain their positions against foreign males during the mating season.
After a gestation period of about 65 days, two to five young, known as “kits”, are born in spring. The kits are subsequently raised by their mother until dispersal in late fall.
Although captive Raccoon or Procyon lotor have been known to live over 20 years, their life expectancy in the wild is only 1.8 to 3.1 years. In many areas, hunting and vehicular injury are the two most common causes of death.
