Reeves’s muntjacs, also known as the Chinese muntjac or the barking deer is found widely in south-eastern China and Taiwan.

This species occupies a wide native range spanning from Gansu to Yunnan. Feral groups also live in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, Belgium and Japan.

Herbs, blossoms, succulent shoots, fungi, berries, grasses, and nuts make up the core diet. Tree bark provides extra nutrients when regular food grows scarce.

Bird eggs and carrion offer opportunistic sources of protein from time to time. Mothers give birth to one fawn after a seven-month pregnancy.

Reddish-brown fur covers the body; white striped markings decorate the face. Lighter fur accents the creamy-white belly, neck, chin, and underside of the tail.

Males grow short antlers under 3.9 inches long and sharp two-inch upper canine tusks. Bony forehead lumps and black spots distinguish the females. Alarm calls sound like loud barking dogs.
