The rhesus macaque comes from South, Central, and Southeast Asia. Their immense geographic range covers India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Afghanistan, Vietnam, and Southern China. They have the widest range of all non-human primates.

While native to Asia, human introduction has established wild, free-ranging invasive populations in Florida and Puerto Rico.

They live in arid open areas, grasslands, woodlands, mountainous regions, and cities. They are diurnal, arboreal, and terrestrial. They communicate with varied facial expressions, vocalizations, body postures, and gestures. Swimming is a strong suit for them. Troops range from 20 to 200 individuals.

Scientists use them extensively in medical and biological research due to their closeness to humans. This animal helped scientists create vaccines for rabies, smallpox, and polio.

Mostly herbivorous, they feed on fruit, seeds, roots, buds, bark, and cereals. Macaques living in cities also eat human food. Females give birth to one baby at a time. The mother nurses and protects her single infant closely within the troop.

International Monkey Day - December 14th

International Monkey Day has been created to celebrate monkeys on December 14th, as well as “all things simian,” which includes lemurs, tarsiers, apes, and other non-human primates. It is a great day when it comes to raising awareness about different types of monkeys and primates around the world, as well as the issues they face and how we can help them.
