The short-beaked common dolphin is a medium-sized marine mammal. This animal is smaller than the popular bottlenose dolphin. It lives in the North Atlantic coastal areas and adjacent waters.
Adults vary in length from five to eight feet. They range in weight from 220 to 29 pounds. Males are generally larger and heavier than females.
The back of this dolphin is dark and the belly is white. An hourglass pattern colors each side with light grey, yellow, or gold in front. The back part of this pattern is a dirty grey color.
The animal has a long, thin snout. This snout holds 50 to 60 small, sharp interlocking teeth on each side of each jaw. They can live in huge groups of hundreds or even thousands of individuals.
These dolphins sometimes travel with other species like pilot whales. This animal is a very fast swimmer that reaches speeds over 37 miles per hour.
