The siamang monkey comes from Southeast Asia. Their geographical range includes the forest remnants of Sumatra Island, the Malay Peninsula, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. They live in lowland forests, mountain forests and rainforests. They are the largest of all the gibbons.
This arboreal ape has long, dense, shaggy black fur. Their arms are long, gangling, and stretch longer than their legs. Their faces are mostly hairless with thin mustaches. Their deep brown irises blend in closely with their dark, facial skin.
They live in groups of up to six individuals. Melodious singing breaks out in the forest silence in the early morning from these spectacular chimps.
Plants are a major percentage of their diet. They consume over 160 plant species, including vines and woody plants. A major food source is figs, and they prefer ripe fruit and young leaves. 60 percent of their diet is fruit including durians. They eat flowers, insects, and a few small animals.
Hunting, habitat loss, the illegal pet trade threatens them.

It is a great day when it comes to raising awareness about different types of monkeys and primates around the world, as well as the issues they face and how we can help them. |
