The American mountain goat is a hoofed mammal endemic to North America. This sub-alpine species climbs sure-footedly across cliffs and icy mountains.

It is also known as the Rocky mountain goat. Both billies and nannies have beards, short tails, and long black horns. These horns measure 5.9 to 11 inches in length and contain yearly growth rings.

Woolly white double coats protect them from the elements. An outer layer of longer, hollow hairs cover the fine, dense wool of their undercoats.

American mountain goats shed in spring by rubbing against rocks and trees. The adult billies shed their extra wool first, while the pregnant nannies shed last.

The male stands about 3.3 feet at the shoulder and weighs considerably more than the female. They also have longer beards and horns than the females.

They are strictly herbivores feeding on various mountain grasses, sedges, lichens, and mosses. They also chew on woody shrubs and alpine tree bark during the winter months.

Females gestation lasts about six months, and she births her young on steep, inaccessible rock ledges to avoid predators. The newborn kid can stand and climb dangerous cliffs win hours of birth.
