Ammosaurus was a small, ancient dinosaur that walked on two or four legs. Its name means “sand lizard”. This animal lived during the Early and Middle Jurassic Period in North America. It stretched about 13 feet long, which was quite small for its dinosaur groups. One top expert estimated its weight and 150 pounds.
Construction workers found the first skeleton in the late 1880s. They were building a bridge in the Connecticut Valley when they hit the bones. This valley was once a wet swamp. The animal searched for food along the muddy banks. People have also found partial bones in Arizona and Nova Scotia.
