The black-tailed prairie dog is a rodent that inhabits the Great Plains of North America, stretching from the United States-Canada border to the Mexico border.
These animals have a tan color with lighter bellies. Their pelt has some color variation, including dark fur on the back in black and brown tones. Their tails have a black tip. Adults weigh between 1.5 and 3.0 pounds. The body length is from 14 to 16 inches. These rodents have long black claws for digging.
Black-tailed prairie dogs live in colonies that range in size from five to thousands of prairie dogs. They have a very loud alarm call for protection of predators.
Their diet includes western wheatgrass, buffalo grass, blue grama, and sedges during spring and summer. Scarlet globemallow and Russian thistle become preferred choices during late summer and fall. During the winter, they choose plains prickly pear, Russian thistle, and underground roots.
