The Eastern chipmunk lives in deciduous wooded areas and urban parks throughout the eastern United States and southern Canada. It prefers locations with rocky areas, brush or log piles, and shrubs to provide ample cover.

This small mammal can climb trees exceptionally well. It constructs underground nests with extensive tunnel systems that often feature several different hidden entrances.

To hide the construction of its burrow, they carry soil to a different location inside its deep cheek pouches. It lines the burrow entrance with leaves, rocks, sticks and other natural materials. This smart behavior makes the home difficult for predators to locate.

It has reddish-brown fur on its upper body. Five dark brown stripes contrast sharply with light brown stripes along its back. These stripes end at a dark tail.

They are true omnivores that consume a massive variety of plant and animal matter. The mainstays of their diet include wild seeds, nuts, acorns, berries, fruits and plant bulbs. They also eat mushrooms, green shoots, fungi and flowers.
