Hyaenodon belonged to an extinct group of meat-eating mammals called creodonts. These large, ancient predators lived across many lands during the early Cenozoic era. They were the most specialized hunters of their entire group.
Fossil hunters often find these ancient predators in the White River Badlands. Only the Hyaenodon group survived into the Oligocene Epoch. All other creodont groups died out by the end of the Eocene Epoch.
These animals lived in Europe and Africa until the late Miocene Epoch. They had huge heads, large crests on their skulls, and wide jaw spaces. These features helped them bite with great force.
They walked on their toes and had teeth made for cutting meat. The largest species fought with ancient saber-toothed cats for food. They hunted similar prey in their habitats.
