The red lesser panda is native to the eastern Himalayas and southwestern China. People call this animal the lesser panda, red bear-cat, or red cat-bear. They live mostly in moss and lichen-covered trees.
These solitary mammals feed mainly on bamboo leaves and shoots. They also eat eggs, birds, and insects. They have strong, cured, semi-retractable claws that face inward. This allows them to easily grasp narrow tree branches and fruit.
Females give birth to their young during the summer months. They typically have a litter of one to four babies. These young cubs are born blind and completely rely on their mother inside a tree hollow.
Their head and body length measures between 20 and 25 inches. their long, shaggy tail adds another 11 to 23 inches. Males weigh between 8.2 and 13 pounds, and the females weigh between 6 and 13 pounds. They are slightly larger than a standard domestic cat.
Their long, bushy tails show six alternating rings. This pattern provides balance and excellent camouflage in the forest. Their short legs are completely black. They have thick fur on the soles of the paws to keep them warm.
Like the giant panda, they have a false thumb. This part is an extension of the wrist bone. They can rotate their ankles when descending a tree head-first. This ability helps them control their descent perfectly.
