Description

Striped hyena male skull replica measures 9.2 x 5.8 x 4.1 inches. The Hyaena hyaena is a museum-quality polyurethane resin cast from a California Academy of Sciences specimen. 2-part skull (separate cranium and mandible). 1:1 scale. Made in USA.

The striped hyena live across North and East Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia. It is the smallest among true hyenas. It has a smaller skull than its larger relatives. The animal mostly scavenges for food, but large individuals can kill their own prey.

These animals form monogamous pairs. Both males and females work together to raise their young cubs. This nocturnal creature comes out in complete darkness and returns to its den before sunrise. The animal famously fakes death when threatened, but it will fight larger predators for food.

The skull features a very high crest on top, a short face, and a puffed-up forehead bone. It has a lighter build than the brown or spotted hyena skull. The strong head structure anchors their massive jaw muscles. These muscles give the animal enough biting power to splinter a camel thigh bone.

The striped hyena acts as a scavenger and eats rotting carcasses, flesh bones, and ligaments. It crushes long bones into tiny bits before swallowing them. The animal eats almost anything but avoids vulture meat.

International Hyena Day - April 27

April 27th is International Hyena Day which advocates for changing the public's perspective on hyenas, and seeing their importance on Earth.

Hyenas don't have the greatest reputation due to centuries of bad publicity through literature and folklore. Spread through Africa and Asia, hyenas are intelligent mammals living in clans of 10 to 120 animals. They are skilled hunters, and not only scavengers which still makes them essential to prevent the spread of disease. They have highly acidic stomachs to break down their food, even though it isn't the freshest quality.

Their "demonic laugh" is often misunderstood, as it occurs when a lower-ranking animal is stressed. Hyenas are vulnerable to extinction because of habitat loss and persecution by farmers and poachers.
