Uintatherium was a large, rhino-sized Eocene herbivore (approx. 4m long, 2-ton weight) with a distinctive, low-slung, graviportal, and robust skeleton designed to support immense weight. Key features include a massive, flat skull with 6 ossicones, saber-like upper canines, and a very small brain case.
Uintatherium articulated skeleton replica Features:
- Skull: The skull is long (approx. 76 cm), flat, and concave. It features three pairs of bony protrusions (ossicones) on the nasal, maxillary, and parietal bones, likely used for defense or sexual display. The skull is heavily reinforced with sinuses to reduce weight, similar to an elephant.
- Teeth: Large, sabre-like upper canines protected by large, downward-projecting, shovel-shaped flanges on the lower jaw (mandible).
- Limbs: Robust and column-like (graviportal) for supporting heavy weight.
- Body: Barrel-shaped ribcage and a relatively short tail.
- Brain: Extremely small compared to its body size.
Physical Dimensions & Habits:
- Size: Approximately 4 meters (13 ft) long and 1.5 to 1.7 meters tall at the shoulder.
- Weight: Estimated up to 2 tonnes.
- Diet & Habitat: Browser that likely inhabited subtropical forests and marshy areas during the Eocene epoch (55.8–33.9 million years ago).
Notable Discoveries:
A nearly complete skeleton, including a well-preserved skull, was found by Dr. Charles L. Gazin of the Smithsonian Institution.
Fossils are commonly found in the Uinta Basin of Utah and Wyoming.

Pair the uintatherium disarticulated skeleton replica with our plesiosaurus articulated skeleton replica for an extraordinary museum exhibit.
Contrast the archaic, multi-horned cranial morphology of the uintatherium artiulated skeleton with the massive, bipedal-capable framework of the eremotherium laurillardi giant ground sloth skeleton to analyze the diverse skeletal specializations of prehistoric megafauna.
