The extinct Western horse originally inhabited North America. It lived across the southwestern United States during the Pleistocene epoch.

These ancient wild horses ate grass and other leafy plants. Like modern horses, the mothers carried their young for nearly a year. They usually gave birth to one foal.

These wild horses roamed the grassy valleys and open savannas. Many of their bones ended up preserved inside the sticky asphalt of the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, California.

Life on the prehistoric plains was highly dangerous. Massive predators constantly hunted the Western horse. Its most common enemies include the dire wolf, saber-toothed cat, and American lions.

The Western horse was about the same size as the modern Arabian horse. It measured about 14.2 hands.
