The woodchuck has a wide geographic range across North America. They inhabit low-elevation forests, small woodlots, fields, pastures, and hedgerows. The animal prefers open country and the edges of woodland. It is rarely far from the burrow entrance.

The woodchuck, also known as the groundhog, chuck, wood-shock, groundpig or whistlepig. Other names include whistler, thickwood badger, Canada marmot, monax, moonck, weenusk, and red monk or siffleux.

They are the largest species in its range. Adults measure from 16 to 27 inches in total length, including a tail of 3 to 7 inches. weights fall between 4 and 13 pounds. Males are slightly larger than females.

They are heavier during autumn than when emerging from hibernation in spring and well adapted for digging, with short, powerful limbs and curved, thick claws.

The young pups are born blind, naked inside a deep underground grass nest. They grow rapidly and leave the burrow at about two months.
