The coatimundi, sometimes simply called the coati is native to a few regions of the southwestern United States.

These animals have a long, extremely flexible, pig-like snout that earned them the nickname “the hog-nosed raccoon”. They can rotate this moveable snout up to 60 degrees in any direction to push objects, rub parts of their body, and forage for food. Facial markings include a clear white patch around the eyes, ear, and snout.

They have strong limbs and dig, and they have a reputation for high intelligence. They prefer to sleep or rest in elevated places like the rain forest canopy inside crudely bult sleeping nests. Coatis are active during the day.

These diurnal animals live both on the ground and in trees. They are omnivores, but they primarily eat fruit, bugs, other small animals, and bird eggs. They search for fruit high in the canopy and use their snouts to poke through narrow cracks on the ground to find prey. They also turn over rocks or use their sharp claws to rip open logs.

A mother coati leaves her family group to build a private tree nest right before she gives birth. Females give birth to a litter of three to seven babies. The gestation lasts about 77 days. Once the young pups learn how to climb down safely, the mother brings them back to rejoin her family group.
