The Bufeo negro or Tucuxi Gray River Dolphin, is a species of freshwater dolphin found in the rivers of the Amazon basin.
The Bufeo negro is frequently described as looking similar to the bottlenose dolphin, but it is typically smaller at around 1.5 m (4.9 ft). The dolphin is colored light to bluish grey on its back and sides.
Bufeo gris calves gestation is estimated at 11 to 12 months. The calves are born in the fall during low water on the Amazon.They are usually around 71 to 106 centimters long. They begin to eat fish when they reach about 51 to 59 inches. Wihtin a few days of birth a calf can vocalize. Mother-calf bonds are long-lasting; a calf typically stays with it’s mother for 3 to 6 years. Calves usually live in larger pods to learn life skills from other dolphins.
The skull of Tucuxi Gray River Dolphin typically measures around 12.9 inches in length and has a moderate length beak. Their teeth are uniform in size and shape and are perfect to grab slippery fish. They have 26 to 36 pairs of teeth in each jaw.
Interactions of tucuxi dolphins with fishing activity is common in the Western Brazilian Amazon. Tucuxi forage on schooling fish that are also important species for commercial fishing in the area.
Tucuxi Gray River Dolphin are particularly vulnerable to entanglement in commercial fishing nets in the lower Japurá River. The carcasses of the dolphins caught incidentally or intentionally are often used as bait for piracatinga fishing.
